Your Questions About Bernese Lab Mix

Donald asks…

how much does an 8 wk old puppy eat?

puppy is bernese/lab mix, 8 weeks old. how much & how often to feed? what is the best puppy food?

Sarah Jones answers:

My Labs get a half cup of Pro Plan chicken and rice puppy chow each of 3 times a day. I have my doubts if Pro Plan is any better or worse than anything else. I have seen great results feeding it. I feed it solely because that is what my puppies are eating when I get them. There is plenty of evidence that even gradual changes of food upset a puppy’s digestion. There isn’t a shred of evidence that changing to Blue Buffalo or other expensive foods gives healthier puppies than sticking to a common brand.

If you go to the rating sites, you will find the ratings are largely based on speculation about the ingredients and irrelevant things such as the size of the company making the food.

You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

For the same reason, keep it lean. Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
