Barley the Lab Mix from San Diego

Barley Barley is a playful Lab/Australian Shepherd mix hoping to find his forever home. For our readers in the southern California area, Barley is currently at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.

Barley is 3 years old and gets along well with other dogs. He is hoping to be adopted by active parents who will take him on lots of outdoor adventures.

We think this guy is so cute! He has such soulful eyes, and we love his Blue Merle coloring.

If you're interested in adopting this handsome boy, or know someone who might be, visit Barley's listing on Petfinder (there's even a video of him in action)!

Do you work for a shelter or rescue group and have an adoptable dog you'd like us to feature? Let us know! Send an email to submissions@luvmutt.com.

Video: Don't you wish YOUR dog could talk?

We have been trying to teach our luvmutts to talk, but they just sit there and look at us like we're crazy! Here is  a compilation video of people who've actually had success teaching their dogs to talk. Maybe we can learn something from them!

Hazel the Dalmatian Mix from Oregon

Hi, my name is Hazel. I'm a 13-year-old dalmatian/staffy mix from Portland, OR. My parents took me in when I was only 5 weeks old, and they were so protective of me that they made me sleep in their bed. I grew up to be 70 lbs., and I still insist on sleeping on the bed (they actually bought a bigger one to accommodate me). I am very smart and I always tilt my head when people are talking, trying to analyze what they're saying. They call me the "People Whisperer". I have my own, pet, too, a terrier mix named Oscar who I love very much. My favorite place to go is the beach. I'm so overjoyed when I get there, I bark with glee the whole time. For an old girl that's beaten cancer and had her knees replaced, I think I look pretty good!

dalmatian mix

Can we go to the beach today, please?

dalmatian mix

Me and my dog, Oscar, are sick of this rain.

Finally, I get to play in the sand!

The snow is fun, too, but nothing beats the shore!

Mutts find their heritage with DNA test

We would love to know our luvmutts' lineage. Have you had your dog genetically tested?

From the Knoxville News Sentinel:

Doggenetictesting Brody Retinger barely even flinched as the foam swab ran along the inside of his mouth, collecting the building blocks of his genetic makeup.

The "grand-dog" of Meg Retinger, chief administrative officer of EDP Biotech Corp., was at the Knoxville company's headquarters to try out the company's new DNA test that would reveal his heritage.

With a few wipes from a foam swab and some lab tests, the mystery was solved in a matter of days: Brody is primarily German shepherd and chow, with some Labrador and collie thrown in for good measure.

Mutts like Brody may be mysteries no longer with the new at-home test from BioPet Vet Lab, a division of EDP.

Molly the Sheltie Mix from Nebraska

Hello, my name is Molly and I'm the "angel" of the Roberts family. (You've met Lucy and Toby.) I never leave my mommy's side. I'm much more of a people-dog than a dog-dog. My last owners got rid of me because they said I was "too barky." I think they were too barky. I have a lot of medical problems, including epilepsy and arthritis, but I have a wonderful vet and of course Mommy takes excellent care of me. I'm very happy I found her!

sheltie mix

I am so lucky that my people take such good care of me.

sheltie mix

And hey, I still know how to have a good time!

sheltie mix

I couldn't have asked for a better home.

Those barky people don't know what they're missing.

Dear luvmutt: A Dog About Town

We received an email recently from a mutt who wrote a book. And you think your mutt is smart! The letter was too cute not to print, see for yourself...

Dear luvmutt:

My name is Randolph. I am a Labrador retriever and the main character and narrator of the book from Random House above (A Dog About Town by J.F. Englert). It has been chosen as a Mystery Guild and Literary Guild featured selection, the Dog Writers Association of America have nominated it for their fiction award, and many pet owners and groups are raving about the book. I thought I should introduce myself to you because I hope to be around for a while and I thoroughly enjoy luvmutt, being of mixed lineage myself.

A Dog About Town is a mystery set in New York City (the start of a series) and is also quite funny. It has been hard work for this dog to get the word out to those who value mystery writing and who love dogs, but as I have said people who have read A Dog About Town really like it, including Lisa Guidarini who had this to say:

"A mystery narrated by a Labrador retriever. Alright, sounds a little off-beat if that's all you knew about it. But, writing from a dog's perspective (an intelligent, Dante-loving dog at that), allows for an interesting take on humans. Looking at the things we do through the eyes of another species is occasionally very funny, and Englert's very clever in that way. Randolph, not being your standard dog, sometimes disdains even the things dogs do naturally, discriminating between dogs who relieve themselves just anywhere, and dogs like himself who prefer the sanctity of sheltering bushes."

As I said, it's been a challenge getting the word out to dog lovers and any thoughts or support in this area would be most welcome.

Sincerely,
Randolph

We're impressed, Randolph, and we're happy to help a mutt of "mixed lineage." A Dog About Town is currently available on Amazon.com and we can't wait to read it!

Owners take note: When your pool is so dirty that your dog won't jump in to retrieve a ball, it's time to clean the pool.

Harold the Poodle Mix from Washington, D.C.

My name is Harold and I'm a poodle/terrier mix from our nation's capital. My parents adopted me from the shelter, and they actually thought I was a black poodle until they brought me home and gave me a bath. That's when they discovered I am actually grey and not a full poodle. Like all city dogs, I love chasing pigeons and squirrels. I'm also quite a jumper. My parents used to keep me gated in the kitchen when they went to work, but when they came home, I'd be on the couch. It was a gate intended for labs...I'm only 16 pounds. I can also jump high enough to reach the kitchen counter and steal loaves of bread. Just a hobby, really.

poodle mix

Oh hey! Didn't expect you home so soon.

poodle mix

Where are you taking me? You can't contain me!

poodle mix

Okay, not funny.

poodle mix

A pumpkin suit?! Even less funny. I promise I won't go on the couch again!
