Your Questions About Yorkie Shih Tzu

Sandy asks…

What is better? yorkie? or shih tzu? or a pomeranian?

Parents are giving me a dog as my gift. Told me that it’s up to me to choose a breed but I can’t decide between Yorkie, Shih tzu and Pomeranian…Pls help me and state why

Sarah Jones answers:

A Toy Dog isn’t the best choice for a family with kids. All small dogs are harder than average to housebreak – small dogs have small bladders and need to go out about every four hours. Many tiny dogs tend to be spoiled, yappy little ankle-biters if they’re not raised properly. My cousin used to breed them – you could visit there for eight hours and they NEVER shut up! Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkies and other long-haired Toy dogs need lots of brushing to keep the coat from matting. They tend to be fragile and easily stepped on – a broken leg in a Yorkie can cost you a bundle for the delicate surgery. They are not ornaments to show off in a Prada shoulder bag – they are living breathing animals that need care and training. If you get one from a really good breeder and raise it properly, you can have a great dog.
There are some people who try to breed them even smaller and call them “teacup” dogs – that’s a fancy way of charging a higher price for a dog with more health problems.

For the most fun dog, I’d recommend one of the Sporting breeds for a kid (but NOT a Weimaraner or a Dalmatian!) My all-time favorite mid-sized dog for kids is the English (or Welsh) Springer Spaniel. They require some grooming, but don’t shed too much, are generally great with kids and easy to train. Females are a little bit easier than males, but either should make a terrific pet. They will need a good thirty minute walk every day.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and ENGLISH Cocker Spaniels (NOT American!) are great too and need less exercise. They are small, sweet and quiet.

Vizslas, Setters, Labs and Goldens are usually great with kids but they’re bigger and are very boisterous until they are about two. Labs shed a LOT.

I’d also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly – there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Whatever breed of puppy you decide on DON’T go to a pet shop or buy one off the internet!!!! You’ll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you’ll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven’t been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases – that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can’t take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These “breeders” have figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there’s something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site – they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

Your Questions About A Sleeping Destiny

Jenny asks…

Is chapter 2 of my story good? (Part 2)?

Please read part 1 first. Tell me what you think!!!!

At that moment her mum came into the room, her layered, shoulder-length auburn hair bouncing at her shoulders and a cheery smile spread across her rosy face.
“Good morning! You’ve had a long sleep, it’s almost half twelve!” she exclaimed.
“How did I get here?” Destiny asked sleepily.
“Well, I expect you came through the door and climbed into bed,” she said sarcastically before turning more serious, “though I didn’t here you come in last night. Oh well, I suppose I was just in a deep sleep!”
Destiny had a horrible feeling of how she had gotten from the forest to her bed without her knowing. It must have been them. But why?
Throughout that day Destiny was trying to think of a ‘logical explanation’ for what was happening. It was frustrating, knowing that there was no logical explanation.
On Monday at school she couldn’t concentrate on anything. Not her friends, nor her lessons and teachers. All her friends’ words dissolved in her mind before she could grasp the meaning of them. If she could just know the answer to all her questions then she felt sure her mind would be at rest.
In her room that evening she was surprised to see a small, white piece of paper folded and tied with a red ribbon lying on her pillow. It could have been anything, but nothing prepared her for what was written….
Dear Destiny,
This letter will explain the answers to your many questions about us. Before we begin, we are the mysterious figures that seem to appear wherever you go .
Firstly, we need to tell you that you are not human. You are partly vampire but mostly a fallen angel. That is why you will notice that you are often not hungry, because you do not need to eat. You may feel thirsty most of the time and it can’t be quenched with a human drink, only with blood, but try not to because it is very hard to stop once you have started.
Secondly, you may be wondering how we know this. The reason is, though hard to believe, we are your real parents, from when you were alive, of course. Obviously you won’t believe us so to prove that you are adopted look in the top draw of your mother’s chest-of-drawers and you will find a small red box at the bottom that contains a key. In her cupboard at the very back there is a black box. Open it and you will see.
Thirdly, it is very important that you realise you are not just a fallen angel. You are the fallen angel. You have powers beyond imagination but to use them you must sacrifice something. On Saturday you will find out more.
That is all for now.
Love,
Emmalyn and Ivan
P.S It felt weird to put ‘mum and dad’, we hope you don’t mind.

After the letter hand slipped through her trembling hands she stood, shaking with fear and confusion. This letter had completely changed her life. She was going to check all the same, when she had recovered. If she recovered.
It took her almost four days to recover. School was pointless. Her brain wasn’t connected to the outside world. Out of sync. Her mind replayed the letter that she had read many times before. It only slowed herself from her already snail-paced working. In maths she only completed two questions out of fifty-five, though almost everyone had moved onto the next challenge. Her break time detention wasn’t even enough for her to complete ten questions. Destiny was losing sleep and her parents were starting to notice.
Saturday came and Destiny decided that she was ready to face her dread before whatever was going to happen later on ( as it said in the letter) would happen.

THere are some minor issues that will correct themselves with practice (I hope so anyway for my sake).

Your Questions About Bichon Chihuahua Mix Puppies

Sandra asks…

How much are Chi-Chon puppies worth (Chihuahua/Bichon Frise mix) ?

Our female Chihuahua just had six puppies with a Bichon. Five of them have white and merengue colored, curly coats and the other one is alot smaller than the others and has a plain white coat with straight hair (looks alot more like the Chihuahua but with a little longer hair).

Sarah Jones answers:

I doubt you’d make any money off of them, just find good homes for them where you know they will be cared for their entire lives and where they will be spayed/neutered…
I got my chi-pom for free because my old boss had 7 puppies that no one wanted, so 6 went to family and the last unwanted one came with me!

If you’re lucky enough to find someone who falls in love with them (based on “cuteness” instead of sensibility), you could charge a max of maaaaybe $50 for the first two months of care you proved :-

Your Questions About Lab Dalmation Mix Puppies

Maria asks…

color variations or a mutt puppy?

as some of you may know, and for those that don’t, about 3 weeks ago a little lab mix puppy was dumped at my feet (metaphorically speaking) where i work. the lab i can see. but he’s fairly tall and leggy. has all his grown up teeth and his testicles have finally dropped (yes. he gets neutered next week). he’s about 35 lbs right now.
always a crap shoot with the mutts of course, but sure makes things easier for re-homing if i can at least have an idea.
he runs like a dalmation. and though a bit long, his ears are the general shape of a dalmation.
otherwise, he’s all black with a bit of white on his chest. so i’m wondering if a lab and dalmation were to mate, is it POSSIBLE to have an all black puppy?
the few mixes i’ve seen of this breeding always have had white on their feet, or tail etc etc…
my camera’s broken so i can’t post pics.
thanks
OOPS! my bad!
“ON” a mutt puppy…..
(not wearing my glasses)

Sarah Jones answers:

Dalmatians are white dogs who carry a T (ticking gene) or a variant there of. Black is dominant over white patterns, so the solid black color is going to be inherited as the phenotype (outside appearance)
The expression of white toes, tail tips and others, are expressions of the MITF spotting gene and if it isn’t present, the most white that will occur is the white spot on the chest.

Your dog should live for at LEAST another 5 years. If she’s having problems, take her to the vet.
